Project 1B Concept

My concept for project 1B is a further explanation of my AHA moment in project 1A. Depending on the angle in which the cubes are being viewed a different part of the story is being told. However, my best attempt at an overall explanation would be: ” If you were to pause time in my life right now, in the round are my thoughts, influences, concerns and goals regarding my feelings about design. They’re symbolic representations of me and my life and my strong emotions regarding not settling and continuing to break free from expectations.”

I had a good time with both projects and felt pretty close to accomplishing and expressing my ideas in both. I also enjoyed the challenges that working in 3D provided.

I wanted to share the meaning of the light bulb that was brought to question today during class. THE FOREVER LIT is a project I have been working on since 2009. Over the past three years it has gained momentum on the west coast and is a continuous way for me to practice design and express my self. The website houses a blog that creates an interactive between TFL and its fans along with a gallery that showcases street art & poster art that I have done along with an online store for the sale of the products I have created. I do 100% of the work involved including designs, street art, clothing, advertising, photography, business, merchandising, shipping products and creative direction. It can be seen in stores in Oregon and California, locally at Urban Laundry in Corvallis.

What was your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge I felt for this project was creating an interaction between the viewer and the cube planes in such a way that told a story simultaneously when the cubes are shifted and opened that was successful at every angle as well as in the round.

What discoveries have you made throughout the project?

I have discovered the challenges of conceptualizing the transition from 2D layout to 3D in the round, it is especially hard connecting elements on different axis on different cubes.

What have you learned or experienced from working on the 2D narrative project to the 3DCube project?

From the last project I have learned the importance of point of view when working in 3D compared to straight on POV in 2D.

How has your ideas about graphic design changed since you began the class?

My ideas about graphic design have remained passionate, ambitious and self motivated since the beginning of the class.

I didn’t use this template to print my cubes because I built 4” cubes out of foam core to avoid the confusion of placement and to increase the overall quality of my cubes but this is what those templates would have looked like. Its difficult to see the connections that are made by their construction and composition as a whole.

This is a custom template I made to make printing and constructing the cubes a more manageable task via the Kinko’s quick print option. The layout given to us in class seemed to be more of an extruded rectangle, which would make for the final scaling in Illustrator to 4” x 4” or the transfer of a sketch from the maquette to the final product distorted, proportionally.

I will use this 11” x 17” template to construct blank cubes to determine the compositional placement of the cubes and then I will also work from this layout in Illustrator to produce a digital image that will be printed in this format to then be constructed into a cube.

I have the PDF & Ai file an email away if anyone wishes.

The type is in Helvetica.

Project 1B is going to bring a whole new series of challenges. To be able to successfully represent a moment and idea using the sides of a cube is going to be based mostly on hierarchy and rhythm to lead the eye around the cube in a way that can portray your message accurately.

I don’t know if I will be able to grasp these concepts in this context until I have built several versions of each cube and a considered all factors immensely.

Ultimately my goal is to be able to tell my story from all sides of the cube no matter which direction a viewer would take.

The top image is the composition I chose to turn in, the font was changed to Helvetica and by using the whole word execute I was forced to make a new outlet.

Criticism during the final critique was that “execute” was more obvious now the outlet situation was more successful. I did not feel fully satisfied with the final result however so I attempted in the bottom image to take it one more step and combine the outlet and the U once again.

In the first version of my triptych, for the text I used something other than Helvetica and I attempted to make a U with the negative white space from the form of an electrical outlet.

The criticism was that “excite” was being read, instead of execute and also that the electrical outlet wasn’t working successfully.
